Do not boast about tomorrow, For you do not know what a day may bring forth. Proverbs 27:1 NKJV My grandma often used this famous quote: “Don't put off until tomorrow what you can do today.” ― Benjamin Franklin The "I'll get to it" complacency trap applies to whatever we say to ourselves to put off those things that should be a priority.
Let’s look at the word boast from the English Oxford Dictionary. Everyone is familiar with the first and prominent definition, but I call your attention to the second lesser known definition (the one the Bible used in the above verse). boast bōst/ verb 1. talk with excessive pride and self-satisfaction about one's achievements, possessions, or abilities. Example: "Ted used to boast, “I manage ten people” Synonyms: brag, crow, swagger, swank, gloat, show off... 2. (of a person, place, or thing) possess (a feature that is a source of pride). Example: "The hotel boasts high standards of comfort. "Synonyms: possess, have, own, enjoy, pride oneself/itself on
We are prideful when we put things off that should be done today thinking we have time. We are reminded and warned not to 'boast' like we even possess a tomorrow. The very things we are putting off, are the things that hold us back from reaching today's potential. What are you putting off? Time with God? Time with your family? A simple phone call? Letting go of something someone said or did? Laying aside unmet expectations and disappointments? Regrets? Forgiving yourself? Following God’s call on your life?
“Do not say to your neighbor, “Go, and come back, and tomorrow I will give it.” When you have it with you.” Proverbs 3:28 NKJV
Do Not Boast About Tomorrow
“Come now, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, buy and sell, and make a profit”; whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapor that appears for a little time and then vanishes away. Instead you ought to say, “If the Lord wills, we shall live and do this or that.” But now you boast in your arrogance. All such boasting is evil. Therefore, to him who knows to do good and does not do it, to him it is sin. Any boasting should be done in the Lord, not in self or the idea that there is more time.” James 4:13-17 NKJV Do Not Boast About Tomorrow Any boasting should be done in the Lord, not in self or the idea that there is more time. “But let the one who boasts boast about this: that they have the understanding to know me, that I am the LORD, who exercises kindness, justice and righteousness on earth, for in these I delight,” declares the LORD.” Jeremiah 9:24 NIV Therefore, as it is written: “Let the one who boasts boast in the Lord.” 1 Corinthians 1:31 NIV
Be blessed, make today a priority because tomorrow is not promised
